How to Care for Your Wooden Electric Guitar: 5 Key Tips

Taking care of your electric guitar keeps it looking and sounding great. Here’s a quick guide to keep your wooden electric guitar in top shape:

1. Maintain Balanced Humidity
Wooden electric guitars are sensitive to extreme humidity—too dry, and the wood may crack; too humid, and it can warp. Keep it around 40-60% humidity. In very dry or humid areas (or if you travel), using a case humidifier or dehumidifier can really help.

2. Condition the Fretboard
A couple of times a year, apply a small amount of fretboard oil to keep the wood smooth. Just rub it on, let it sit for a few minutes, and wipe off any excess to keep it feeling comfortable under your fingers.

3. Replace Strings Regularly
Old strings lose brightness and tuning stability. If they sound dull or feel sticky, replace them. Clean hands help, so wash up before playing, and wipe the strings down after each session.

4. Clean and Polish
To keep your guitar looking great, use a polish made for its finish and a soft microfiber cloth to avoid scratches. For metal parts, polish gently to prevent tarnish and keep them shiny.

5. Maintain the Electronics
Electronics affect your guitar’s sound, so keep them in good shape. Pots, jacks, and switches can get noisy or loose. Every few months, apply electrical contact cleaner on them, and check that wires and connections are secure to avoid buzzing or signal loss.

Bonus Tip: Play Often!

The more you play, the better you’ll notice any small changes. Playing regularly helps you stay in tune with your instrument and catch when it needs a little care.
